The Noble Eightfold Path

The Noble Eightfold Path corresponds to the fourth Noble Truth, the way to the cessation of suffering. It:

  • is symbolised by the dharmachakra, an eight-spoked wheel which is also a symbol for Buddhism
  • is a path of self transformation which Buddhists of all traditions and all walks of life try to follow
  • has eight steps or limbs which together cover all aspects of life

Its 8 'limbs' are as follows:

  1. Right View
  2. Right Intention
  3. Right Speech
  4. Right Action
  5. Right Livelihood
  6. Right Effort
  7. Right Mindfulness
  8. Right Meditation
